Map Collaboration
Mapiry supports authenticated map collaboration. Instead of sharing one login, you can invite other Mapiry users to a specific map with a role.
Roles
There are three collaboration roles:
Owner
The owner is the original creator of the map.
Owners can:
- Edit map content
- Manage collaborators and invitations
- Change owner-only settings
- Delete the map
Editor
Editors can help maintain the map.
Editors can:
- Add, edit, and delete locations
- Add, edit, and delete categories
- Add, edit, and delete tags
- Use the map workspace like a content editor
Editors cannot:
- Manage collaborators
- Change owner-only settings
- Delete the map
Viewer
Viewers have authenticated read-only access.
Viewers can:
- Open the shared map
- View locations, categories, tags, and collaboration activity
Viewers cannot:
- Edit map content
- Manage collaborators
- Change settings
- Delete the map
How Invitations Work
Collaboration is invitation-based.
- The map owner opens the map management/settings area.
- The owner enters the collaborator's email address.
- The owner chooses a role: Editor or Viewer.
- Mapiry sends an invitation email.
- The invited person signs in or creates an account with the matching email address.
- After acceptance, the map appears in their shared maps experience.
Accepting an Invitation
Invitation emails link to /invitations/accept.
The accept flow handles these cases:
- Unauthenticated users are prompted to sign in or create an account.
- Authenticated users with the matching email can accept and open the map.
- Users signed in with the wrong email see a mismatch message.
- Revoked, expired, or already accepted invitations show a clear status page.
Where Shared Maps Appear
Shared access appears in the dashboard map experience alongside maps you own.
You can use shared maps to:
- Open the map workspace
- See your role on that map
- Distinguish owned maps from collaborator access
Collaboration Activity
Mapiry stores activity history for important collaboration events and map content changes.
Examples include:
- Invitation created
- Invitation accepted
- Invitation revoked
- Collaborator removed
- Map content updates such as locations, categories, and tags changing
Collaboration vs. Share Links
Collaboration is different from public sharing and temporary access links.
Collaboration
Use collaboration when someone needs durable authenticated access to help manage or review a map.
Best for:
- Team members
- Clients
- Internal reviewers
Public sharing or access tokens
Use normal sharing when someone only needs to view the map.
Best for:
- Public audiences
- Temporary private previews
- Website embeds
See Sharing Your Maps for public links, embeds, and temporary access tokens.
Important Limits
- Collaboration is map-specific, not workspace-wide.
- Only the owner can invite or remove collaborators.
- Invitations are tied to an email address and must be accepted by a matching account.
- Real-time co-editing is not part of this feature. Collaborators share access to the same map, but live presence and live edit sync are separate future work.
